Rig ex mining?

Post by FuorissimoX »

Hi everyone, I was considering purchasing 2 8gb nvidia cards. My pc has a maximum of 2 PCI express inputs (of which only one is 16X). Then I asked myself this question that I turn to you. If I buy a mining structure and dedicated power supply and buy, let's say 5 cards used ex mining from 1 year ago of 4gb each, I probably spend the same amount but I can add as many cards as I want at low cost. The only thing I wonder is how to make faceswap "see" these external cards since I don't have Thunderbolt but only USB 3. Do you think it is feasible?

The problem with mining systems is they severely limit the bandwidth to the card. For mining that's fine, but AI cares a lot more about the bandwidth and you'll find your cards bottlenecked if you do that.

Hi thanks for the answer: I had written other questions on other topics but they have not been published. Strange...

Anyway, I don't want to use an ex mining system but I was just thinking of buying 4 / 8gb nvidia cards that were used to mine and now they are no longer suitable (every 18 months they have to change them). It was a way to have an external, scalable and inexpensive system. Am I wrong?

My gol is to reduce from 50H (i use R9 270x 4GB) to 12H, training time. Scalable solution i like because i can add all GPU i want. I want to create a local gpu "cluster".

Most CPUs only have a limited number of PCI-E lanes. Any less than 8 lanes per card and you're seriously limiting the card's effectiveness. Unless you have a Threadripper, 2 cards is about the maximum you can use in most systems. That said, a single Nvidia GPU will easily cut your time by that amount (50hrs on an AMD is about the same as 12 on an Nvidia).

Someone posted this, unsure how valid the results are . If you are looking to buy for FS you could gauge your purchases>

https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/hpc/R ... tiveCharts

I've tried to use cards connected by pcie 1x . Not great.
They seem usable as individuals, but using them together in parallel processing is all but useless.

If one card is 100%, 2 cards, where one is pcie 1x is like 40% of the single card.

:o I dunno what I'm doing

Its all your choice.
FS now has RTX support and having more than 6GB vram is the best.

I just 'benchmarked' my cards after reading your post.
With the current model I'm running a 2070 is 2.5x a single 1070.

In my test with my R9 270X 4gb i have best result usign batch size = 48

Model: original

bs 16 = eg/s 22.5
bs 32 = 24.9
bs 48 = 28.5
bs 65 = 26
bs 74 = 23
bs 75 crash

Why you have so low Eg/s rate? :?
