Is there a way to sample the video? I.e. sampling frames 1-300 of a video 2000 frames long, in order to get an idea of one's work.

I thought I figured out how to do it through "frame range" but then I realized after it was taking an extraordinarly long time after reaching 99% that it was going through the whole video, and that frame range was not intended to do this.

Not directly, no. The easiest way would be just to crop the video to be just the first 300 or so frames.
